Accessibility - Captioning, Visual Impairment, Guide Dogs, Wheelchair Users, Hearing Loop

Accessibility

The Playhouse is committed to making the theatre an accessible and enjoyable experience for all our patrons. All areas of the theatre are wheelchair accessible; guide and hearing dogs are welcome. Do ring us if a prior visit would be helpful to you.

WHEELCHAIR USE:

The building is accessible in all public areas and on stage to wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties. There are three wheelchair user spaces on the balcony,  which are reached using a platform stairlift. Please note that the lift can carry a maximum weight of 230kg. There are also four end seats in the main seating area for people who are able to transfer from collapsible aids. Accessible seats will be released to the general public only when all other seats are sold.”

ACCESSIBLE TOILETS:

A number of accessible toilets are available, the first is situated just outside the auditorium and is accessed using a stair lift. The second is outside on the terrace and the third is located in the backstage area of the theatre.

HEARING LOOP:

The Playhouse has a Sennheiser infra-red system to help the hard of hearing. Two models of headset are available, one for use with a hearing aid and one without. They work best when used in the central seats in the auditorium.

If a digital hearing aid is worn, please check if it is loop-enabled with your supplier.

New digital hearing aids are programmed like computers with a vast amount of options available, so it is important to ask your supplier to make sure that your hearing aid is set up for the best reception in a theatre. The standard post-office loop is not always the best choice for accessing extra volume in a theatre and your hearing aid supplier may well be able to improve the compatibility between your hearing aid and our Sennheiser System.

CAPTIONING:

We are occasionally able to offer captioned performances. Captioning converts the spoken word into visible text that provides deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people with access to live performances along with their companions.

PARKING:

The theatre has flat access in front of the main doors, with two Blue Badge parking spaces adjacent to the theatre.

ACCESSIBILITY DISCOUNT:

There is a half-price discount off full-price tickets for wheelchair users and one (optional) companion as well as for those registered blind or who are deaf (advance bookings only and subject to availability). Other people receiving Disability Living Allowance (or equivalent), who need to be accompanied on their visit here, will receive a free ticket for their companion.

Discounted tickets can be booked in person from Norwich Theatre Royal, over the phone or by email - not through our website.
